Introduction of Cement

Cement is a binder, an element used for construction that sets, hardens, and adheres to other materials to bind them together. It is commonly made of limestone, clay, shells, and silica sand, with limestone being the most prevalent ingredient. These materials are crushed and combined with other ingredients (including iron ore), and then heated to about 2,700 F. This material, called clinker, is ground into a fine powder and packaged to use for mixing various cementitious building materials. The most basic raw materials used for cement production are:

1) Limestone:

The most basic element present in every cement type. It consists of lime. A rock that is formed chiefly by accumulation of organic remains (such as shells or coral), consists mainly of calcium carbonate, is extensively used in building, and yields lime when burned.

2) Clay or marl:

Clay is a fine-grained silicate mineral made when rocks break down. It supplies the bulk of silica, alumina and ferric oxide.

3) Other Material:

Other additional material consists of sand, fly ash/PFA (pulverized     fuel ash) and ironstone.

These components or materials are common in almost all types of cement. But for manufacturing OPC, the raw materials are clinker and gypsum and for PPC [FLYASH BASED], the raw materials are clinker, fly ash and gypsum.
